Composed at the dawn of the industrial revolution, Franz Schubert's Winterreise traces an experience of individual loss in a winter landscape.

In postWinterreise Kat Austen creates a sound world around Schubert's song cycle, that leads listeners on a journey of transformation, as old assumptions about the relationship between humanity and nature fall apart under their own weight and new sources of meaning and ways of relating to the more-than-human world are found.

In Schubert's song cycle, nature is subjugated as a mere reflection of the wanderer's inner world. In the hands of Kat Austen, nature asserts itself and shows that even in the midst of the collective loss of mass extinction and climate crisis, a new way of being human emerges.
